Why Counseling

Why hesitate?

Just the other evening, a TV show portrayed a traumatized doctor who was unwilling to see a counselor.

It took a bit of convincing and a counselor’s business card thrust into the doctor’s hand for her to recognize that perhaps if it was okay for the one pushing the card, then it was okay for her.

If this story had taken place decades ago, I might have understood.

But it’s a present-day program. And, sadly, it seems as if there is still hesitation about seeking counseling.

But there shouldn’t be.

“I feel sick; I need to go to the doctor.”

Sore throat? Fever? Backache? Going to the doctor seems appropriate. It’s logical. Even expected. Nobody will criticize you.

But going to a counselor? Mention it, and even friends act as though it’s a character flaw.

Yet there’s no difference.

“I’ll just get help from family – or a friend.”

Pouring your heart out to Aunt Maggie or even your best friend doesn’t give you what you really need.

In counseling, it’s all about you – and I won’t interrupt with my own story.

Aunt Maggie or your best friend might think they’re helping by telling you what they’ve been through, or they might let something confidential and deeply personal to you “slip.”

I won’t on purpose – or accidentally – share with anyone else what you’ve shared. It’s against the ethics of being a counselor.

I’m trained to offer understanding and have an ability to collect what seems terribly scattered in your head, gather it together, and hand it back to you – tidy and neatly packaged.

There are no “have-tos” in counseling with me.

Although I’d recommend coming to sessions weekly for a while, that’s not required. I want to learn about you and then apply all that I’ve learned along the way to your situation.

Counseling is an amalgamation of science and art, and that’s what is so exciting about it!

I used to love to practice scales on my flute. Once I mastered the breathing, the fingering, and worked with various rhythms, the real musicality – the art – began.

If I hadn’t first understood the notes, timing, and key signatures, I could never have added the soul and really made the music my own.

And that’s what counseling is like for me.

You are unique, and I’ve mastered basic counseling techniques and theories that can underly how I see what’s happening with you.

Trusting my intuition and your input, together, we’ll create the music – the artistry – in the process.
