General Questions

Where is your office located?

Like many contemporary counselors, I prefer the comfortable, personal atmosphere of a home office.

Address:

12130 Arbor MesaSan Antonio, Texas

A sliding barn door and white noise keep our sessions completely confidential.

No impersonal waiting room atmosphere here: just park in the driveway and knock on the door when it’s time for your session.

What are your hours?

I work with clients Tuesday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (varies per day).

How do I set up my initial appointment?

Before we set up your first appointment, I’d love to spend some time on the phone to discuss your counseling needs.

Once we agree that we’re a good fit, I’ll send you an invitation to provide information on a HIPAA-compliant client portal. Registering on the portal will give you access to the forms we’ll need before our first session and the option to schedule on my calendar.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you must cancel, please allow 24 hours prior to your session time. If you cancel within 24 hours, you will be charged the entire session fee, whether you are paying through insurance or out-of-pocket.

This policy is not punitive; it is a safety measure. It ensures that you, like other clients, can use vacant spots when you need them, and that I can maintain my business.

Therapy Questions

Whom do you see and what ages?

I conduct individual counseling sessions with women ages 18 and up.

What are sessions like? Will there be homework?

Sessions last between 55 to 60 minutes.

The first couple of times we meet, we’ll review your history and discuss your therapy goals.

EMDR has been researched and proven helpful in a faster timeframe than talk therapy.  Because of this, it is my goal to offer it to you to be of the best help.

What is your training and expertise?

I earned a master’s degree in Counseling & Development from Texas Woman’s University in 2002.

From 2002 to 2012, I worked as a counselor to obtain licensure in the state of Wisconsin, moved a couple of times as a military spouse (once overseas), and continued to broaden my professional experience, additionally gaining licensure in the State of Texas.

Since March 2012, I have practiced as a Texas Licensed Professional Counselor.

In January 2018, I completed EMDR training and earned EMDR certification in March 2019.

Along the way, I have kept up-to-date in the counseling field by completing numerous continuing education courses.

How long will counseling take?

A wise person once told me that clients get what they need from counseling and then move on.

The length of time clients choose to stay in counseling varies.  It is all up to you.

EMDR therapy has been researched and found to be five to seven times faster than traditional talk therapy.  These sessions can follow the once-a-week model or you can consider the EMDR Intensives (see “Services”) which are more focused and are intended to address issues in a shorter timeframe.

Is EMDR scary?

EMDR is a very loving and client-centered approach that goes entirely at your speed. I can’t put anything in your brain that you can’t take out of it.

Clients often say they don’t forget painful memories, but they feel considerable lessening of their intensity. It’s as if the memories move aside, so you have space to live your present life, free of their intrusion.

I will do all that I can to explain each step in the process and answer all your questions.

Just Because Questions

Why do you prefer a home office?

My house has a ready-made room, just perfect for counseling, right inside the front door. It’s been an ideal environment.

After working with hundreds of clients, I’ve had no complaints. Often, they comment on the peacefulness of the room and the comfort of feeling “at home” rather than the sterile, clinical nature of an office building.

Do I need to worry about a dog or cat jumping on my lap since you work from home?

I don’t have a cat. And my dog, Penny, will be safely tucked away in another room while we’re in session.

Do you pray with your clients and talk about scripture?

Because I believe in the personal nature of prayer, I do not ask my clients to pray with me during sessions.

If you are a Christian and want to talk about your faith, I will bring in scripture.

I truly believe we are all on a specially designed path. Wherever you are on your journey and whatever you believe, I honor that and trust you are in good hands.

There is no need within me to change you.

But I am blessed to walk with you for a while.
